AUO, a company that actively practices sustainability, today (Sept. 18) announced that its headquarters building, the AUO Global Research Center (GRC), has passed the ISO 14068-1:2023 carbon neutrality management verification following rigorous evaluation and inspection procedures conducted by SGS Taiwan, an impartial third-party organization. As the first company in the global display industry, as well as in Taiwan, to create a “carbon neutral building*”, AUO has become a standard of excellence in carbon neutrality as it aligns with the global trend and pursues pragmatic GHG management with a focus on quantifying, reducing and retiring GHG emissions. The Company has also pledged to achieve the same goal at all of its office locations in Taiwan by 2030.
Committed to sustainability in business, AUO declared its commitment to carbon neutrality in buildings in 2013, based on the PAS 2060 standard and the Taiwan Guidelines for the Demonstration and Declaration of Carbon Neutrality. Starting with its GRC building in 2023, AUO has taken the lead in advancing carbon reduction by adhering to the principle of carbon neutrality, which prioritizes reducing emissions at the source before offsetting the remaining amount, and following a four-step process of accounting, reduction, energy generation and offsetting to achieve carbon neutral verification in buildings. In terms of accounting and reducing, AUO promotes GHG accounting within the Company and across its value chain in accordance with ISO 14064-1 standards; A building energy monitoring platform has also been established to improve power management efficiency by delivering real-time monitoring of air conditioning, lighting and green energy through the multiplex smart building system of AUO Envirotech, an AUO subsidiary. In addition, power usage optimization, equipment replacement and other measures have been implemented for power-intensive appliances in office areas, such as air conditioners, server rooms and information equipment.
Leveraging its strength in the energy sector, AUO has generated 145,000 KWH of green power for its daily applications through a self-built rooftop solar power plant, which is monitored and maintained using a full-time cloud system. Meanwhile, Corporate Renewable Power Purchase Agreements (CPPAs) have been signed to transfer a portion of its self-generated green power, offsetting the remaining GHG emissions with renewable energy certificates, bringing the GRC building to achieve its RE100 target. Other GHG emissions associated with the building, totaling 974 tons from business travel and commuting are offset by carbon credit approved by the Climate Change Administration of the Ministry of Environment. At this point, AUO has achieved its first declared carbon neutral targets, demonstrating its determination to be carbon neutral at all office locations in Taiwan by 2030.
A leader in corporate sustainability, AUO continues to live up to its green commitment and is actively facilitating the Green DNA program. The Company strives to increase sustainability awareness among its 38,000 employees worldwide, taking a holistic approach to carbon reduction and environmental protection. At the GRC building, for example, sustainability is incorporated into every aspect of the staff’s daily routine, including food, clothing, travel and recreation. AUO promotes a low-carbon diet in the cafeteria, makes employee sweatshirts from recycled PET bottles, sets up exclusive parking spaces and charging piles for electric vehicles, provides carbon footprint report for business travel and runs carbon reduction challenges activity. All of this is designed to turn the office environment into an important front for sustainability, one that leads employees to reflect and change their everyday behavior.
AUO is fervently dedicated to long-term sustainability initiatives. This year, the Company again passed the target validation of the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi), a trusted international organization on climate change. In line with the Paris Agreement goal of limiting temperature increase to 1.5°C, AUO aims to achieve a 42% reduction in Scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions and a 25% reduction in Scope 3 by 2030. The recent achievement of ISO certification sets the stage for future energy conservation actions in buildings as AUO continues to harness renewable power sources year by year and strives to invest in low-carbon products, manufacturing practices and value chain, accelerating the pace of change toward net zero for the group and its value chain.
